1941 October - 2021 April

Created by Christopher 3 years ago

Margaret was born on 8th October 1941 - Alma Margaret Delora Light …….to parents Ron and Alma

With younger brother Michael, Margaret was brought up in Renown Street, Keyham, Plymouth.

Ron worked in Devonport dockyard and Alma was a happy, friendly housewife and dress maker – who’s personality greatly reflected in Margaret.  Alma, was from a large family so there were lots of cousins, aunties and uncles around.

Margaret first attended the local primary school, before moving to Camels Head secondary school.

Margaret finished school and went straight into becoming a hairdresser, which she continued to do in some form or another for most of her life, often to assist and help people rather than any form of business.

With her very first hairdressing pay packet she bought Rooney, a blue roan cocker spaniel.

Margaret met lifelong partner John from Milford Haven, who was a dockyard apprentice, at a local dance in Keyham and after courting for a number of years married in June 1964.

Margaret and John initially lived in Keyham before buying their first home in Moor Lane, St Budeaux.

They had two sons Christopher born in October 1965, Nicholas born in December 1968

Life included trips out on the moors with cousins, aunties and uncles, family Christmases, and for 20 odd years the caravan at Orcambe Point Exmouth, which was always the center of summer holidays.

Margaret started assisting at the local playschool when her boys attended and continued to work there for over 35 years.  She met and knew lots of people, in particular Rose, who she would be a lifelong friend with for the next 50 years.
John continued to work in the dockyard, and together they had many firm friends.  There were evenings out, weekends away and holidays abroad.

Also in the 70’s they had Comet the black Labrador to add to their family.

Both boys went to Devonport High school for Boys, then onto Cardiff and Oxford university respectively.  This meant Margaret and John first travelled to see their boys through college, as they worked in and around London, and then as the boys moved around the world visited them in many places – to Spain, to South Africa, the USA for Nicholas’ marriage to Kerri and Australia.

In 1991 they moved to Powisland Drive, a house they would live in for the rest of their lives.

Nicholas settled in Australia and the first grandchildren, twins Naya and Tamsin were born in 2001, followed by Ky in 2003.

John and Margaret made regular trips out to Australia to spend to with their grandchildren as they grew up, doing over a dozen trips.

Christopher settled in Cornwall 8 years ago and so there were then regular trips across the bridge to see him.

Bramble and Harry the labradors joined the family in Cornwall, and Koda in Australia – Margaret being a big dog lover was always very interested in the exploits of these real characters.  She also loved her a garden in Powisland Drive.

There were regular trips to Wales to support and assist John’s mother in Milford Haven until she passed in early 2017.

Unfortunately at this time John was diagnosed with Myeloma.

In the following years the treatments took their toll on John but Margaret worked tirelessly to support and nurse her husband – them both making the best as they could of the situation.  It was at this time, lifelong long friends rallied around to provide whatever support they could.

John passed on 15th December 2018.

Those friends and family now rallied around even more – it was a big loss to Margaret, they had done so much together, but Margaret had her family and was determined to continue to see them.  Even as Michael her brother passed in 2019.

There was a very memorable holiday to Greece in July 2019 with lots of great memories.

The pandemic curtailed international travel in recent years but there were regular trips to Cornwall, and days out with friends and family.

Margaret was very much looking forward to the coming summer, getting out and about, the up-and- coming 80th birthday in October, and a potential holiday to see the now almost adult grandchildren.  Margaret took great pride in her sons and grandchildren.

Margaret passed on Monday 19th April 2021, following a very fun last weekend in Cornwall with Christopher and speaking to Nicholas on the Sunday on Skype.

Margaret was warm, caring, considerate, hugely family oriented but with strong determination ………. she loved company.  Her chatter, smile and laugh will be greatly missed.
